Composite Materials

Composites are materials which are made from several materials combined. The structure always contains a distinct binding phase known as matrix or binder. The remaining materials used in the composite work as reinforcement.

Division of Materials
Composite materials can be classified in several ways. One of the most widely known classifications follows a breakdown by the type of reinforcement. This breakdown distinguishes types:

  • reinforced with cut fibers
  • reinforced with continuous fibers
  • reinforced with particles.

The composites reinforced with continuous fibers are particularly important. The specific mechanical properties of the fibers mean that the materials show very high values of the mechanical properties while keeping low material density. Therefore it is possible to design very durable and rigid but lightweight structures.

Manufacturability Analysis
A very important aspect of the design process is to predict the manufacturability of the designed geometry. Elements with double curvature require special refinement. There are many problems related to geometries with bidirectional curvature. From a practical point of view it is important to predict where to cut the material to make it possible to lay it in the mold and prevent the material from bending.
These aspects determine the strength of the structure. The cuts themselves call for so-called "overlaps" which must be properly designed and arranged with regard to strength-related reasons.

The additional difficulty related to strength is the impact of distorted fibers on the two-directional curvature. When fibers are distorted within the material, the laminate stiffness and strength changes. The Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) says that when the fiber orientation gets distorted even by a small angle, the stiffness drastically drops... 

FIBERSIM for Aiding the CAD/CAE/CAM Design Works
The FIBERSIM software helps carry out the manufacturability analysis and aids the entire design, strength analysis and production process.



NX software is a comprehensive CAD/CAM/CAE solution delivered by SIEMENS PLM which also enables efficient work on composite-based products – this is supported by a specialized FIBERSIM module.

Design, analysis and production of composite is complicated and specialized work which is done best when engineers have tools allowing them to control various parameters such as the material type, fiber orientation, sequence of layers, balance, symmetry, falling off, joints and pleats. To make this non-geometrical information useful in the design process, they must form a specific geometry or be associated with one so that they can be reviewed and modified at the same time. This is what Fibersim has been created for.

Fibersim makes it easier to process the composite design data to generate full three-dimensional definition of the product. The specification, requirements and purpose of the composite are associated with the geometry in the CAD three-dimensional model. The program offers tools automating repeatable design operations such as material requirements and geometry of plies.

Moreover, the software automates various levels of visual presentation and data presentation to adapt them in an optimized way to the current design task and produces a string of resulting data such as the design documentation, model-based definitions of formats and corporate reports.

Fibersim facilitates the optimization of the composite product, enabling bidirectional communication between individual departments. Analysts understand that to be able to fully benefit from the composite properties, they must determine such orientation of fibers which will ensure best structural properties - but they are constrained by material and production parameters. The program enables analysts to transfer the information about the required fiber orientations to designers and production technicians.

Fibersim makes it easier to develop, manage and define production by using design data and generate an associative production model. The software offers tools which automate the design for the production-related purposes such as plaiting, creasing and adjusting ply edges for the purpose of automatic embedding based on the simulation of the production process and parameters of machines and materials. Fibersim ensures the high quality of composite products through the automation of the development of production data and documentation for molding, cutting out, arrangement of fibers and control.


License Suites

Fibersim works as a module embedded within the NX CAD interface (also CATIA and Pro/Engineer).

It enables the use of the manual ply design method (Ply-based) but at the same time it enables design automation referred to as Multi-Ply. The Multi-Ply project is a simple-to-learn method used to design plies which automates individual design tasks by means of special preliminary specifications, which significantly shortens the period of time necessary to achieve the final effect when introducing subsequent design changes.

It expands the capabilities of FIBERSIM Pro and uses key advantages of many different composite design methods – including the structural ones based on meshes, zones, volumetric fillers and ply-based ones – enabling efficient engineering of a wide  range of products such as large and complicated aerospace structures, automotive carrying structures and jet engine blades.

Flat Pattern Export
The Flat Pattern Export license allows you to export flat cut-outs with starting points, directional curves, markers and textual annotations for automatic or manual cutters from various manufacturers. The supported brands include: Cutting Edge, GFM NS2, Magestic TruNEST, Optimation, Plataine TPO I JETCAM Expert.

Simcenter Structures
The Simcenter Structures license allows to use computational tools employing the finite element method. It allows to carry out linear, non-linear, modal, buckling, heat flow and spot welded joint analyses, both for isotropic materials and for anisotropic ones such as fibrous composites.
